About this piece

An original Edward Curtis photogravure for sale, “Walpi” portrays the ancient Hopi village perched on First Mesa in Arizona, a subject from Curtis’s series The North American Indian that turns from portraiture to place. Curtis frames the stacked stone dwellings and desert sky with the same tonal sensitivity he brought to his sitters, printed as an authentic hand-pulled impression from the original copper plates, not a modern reproduction. The result carries the warm sepia depth and fine gradation collectors associate with a real Curtis photogravure. In a horizontal 11” x 15” format, it makes an evocative landscape statement. Sourced from one of only four known volumes struck from Curtis’s original plates, it is a true collector’s photogravure, an Edward Curtis original print valued both as fine art photography and as a record of one of North America’s oldest continuously inhabited villages.
