Hand-painted lithographs

John Gould

Historical

John Gould (1804-1881) was a British ornithologist and artist whose hand-painted lithographs rank among the finest natural history illustrations ever produced. Over a prolific career he published more than 3,000 plates across landmark volumes including The Birds of Australia, A Monograph of the Trochilidae (hummingbirds), and A Monograph of the Ramphastidae (toucans). Gould sketched each composition from life, then collaborated with lithographers H.C. Richter and W. Hart to transfer, print, and hand-color every plate. Art Source Collective holds four original Gould lithographs, each framed in period-appropriate gold shadowbox moldings.
